Gainsborough

Gainsborough's Landscapes; Themes and Variations,  at Compton Verney.

Girl with Pigs, 1781-82

Gainsborough claimed he avoided 'great' subjects and yet the girl's pose in this painting marks her as an emblem of melancholy. Her seated head-on-hand attitude is found on a classical relief and has been used by other artists.
