Sunset (Brothers), by Caspar David Friedrich, 1830-35, (oil on canvas) at the Byzantine Museum, Athens as part of their Gateway to History exhibition.
This painting by the 19th century German Romantic landscape painter was one of my favourites at the Gateway to History exhibition.
Friedrich is best known for his allegorical landscapes which typically feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees of ruins. His primary interest as an artist was the contemplation of nature, and his often symbolic and anti-classical work seeks to convey a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. His paintings characteristically set a human presence in diminished perspective amid expansive landscape, reducing the figures to a scale, that directs the viewer's gaze towards their metaphysical dimension.
