Bevere Gallery, May 2021

Bevere Gallery, May 2021 exhibition.

A variety of makers in this excellent new exhibition. This is the only gallery in our area that exhibits Christy Keeney's work - he's one of my favourite ceramicists - not that keen on the owls, though. I was pleased to see new work by Walter Keeler, Lara Scobie, Katharina Klug, Jamma Gowland.

Christy Keeney, Horse's Head

'I visited a retrospective exhibition of Picasso at the Tate gallery in the early 1980s when I was at college, and many of my influences came from seeing that work. Especially a collection of small card-board cutout and folded, figurative sculptures. These simple two dimensional pieces opened a world of possibilities on how I would approach my own work'.

Lara Scobie

Scobie's vessels are slip-cast in porcelain and Parian clay. Constructed from soft slabs of clay, her ceramics have delicate rims and edges - line drawings and decoration is applied to the painted surfaces.

Gemma Gowland

Gowland's current work explores the way that girls are constrained from birth to conform to an appearance and code of behaviour,  to present a perfect face and maintain the expectations of others. The disrupted surfaces describe the vulnerability beneath.

And a painting:
