Paris Department Store

The Paris Department Store on Nagymezo utca in the Terezvaros district is a glorious Art Nouveau building. It was Budapest's first department store with a glass façade that soars up five floors. When it opened in 1911 it boasted a roof terrace and even an ice rink. Today it's a large bookstore but the sweeping lines of the interior have been preserved.

It is one of the my favourite buildings in Budapest

its lines a precursor of Art Deco

Those glorious windows seen from the inside.

Light and airy indoors

it must have seemed so modern and so different in 1911

it's a wonderful bookshop.

On the first floor, a complete contrast: the café, which was a ballroom dating from 1885 in a neighbouring casino, magnificently decorated in frescoes by Karoly Lotz.

We just had to stay for a drink, of course - the hot chocolate with orange and cinnamon was delicious
and the sofas and chairs are extremely comfortable

a look at that magnificent ceiling

looking closer.
