The best place for swimming in Nea Styra is outside the village, in Venus Beach. This is where we used to go all those years ago and we decided to do the same this time.
In the past we used to walk from Kouvelles, which is where our house was, and that was a fair walk, a walk we used to do four times a day, to the beach and back, and then, in the evenings to Nea Styra and back.
This time, rather than walking on the road, we walked along the beach - a first, would you believe!
and in between open countryside
A bar, closed every time we walked by - maybe it opened in the evenings, or maybe it had closed for the winter as by the end of September the holiday season was over
a small harbour for small boats
And then, my dream house being built - modern, all glass, with sea views. I want it!
And then, just sand and sea
We could see Venus Beach, or the bungalows, as everyone calls it, in the distance
a small brook running into the sea.
Over the stepping stones
so beautiful
and we had reached Venus Beach
We had a great swim on our first day,
On that first day we took a taxi back to the village. We waited for it here, at the entrance to the bungalows.
We came here every day, but did not manage to swim again. The area is known for its strong, debilitating winds, and the rest of our stay was plagued by those - it was too windy, too cold to swim, but we did come here, relaxed on the shore and went for walks. It was lovely.
We decided to explore the rest of the complex during our second day
The sailing boats and the rescue boats that accompanied them are a new feature
This is the main section of the complex
People come from all over the world to stay here, in the bungalows, but mainly, it's Germans
We took the steps to go into the living quarters
There must be around 200 of these bungalows
and all have great views of the sea
We walked down this passage
a very small swimming area wedged between the rocks
Back to the bungalows
we moved back to the main social area
why anyone would want to use a swimming pool next to such wonderful sea, is beyond me
the bar area. But, we mainly sat by the sea, watched the boats and the wind surfers
and enjoyed the walk back to Nea Styra.
