Artemis Potamianou at Art Athina, 2023, at Zappeion Megaron, Athens.
I really liked the paintings by Potamianou that were exhibited at the fair. These paintings are made up of images that have been appropriated from great and famous masterpieces of the art world and they have been edited resulting in new and comprehensive artworks. Appropriation is nothing new of course - one of the most successful and significant appropriation for me is Sherrie Levine's After Walker Evans, which you can see here
In these particular artworks I loved the juxtapositions of very different images from different periods of time, the mixing of styles, contexts, genres. Vermeer and Banksy; Bottero and Picasso; Vermeer's Bathing Girl in Mies Van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavillion pool; Degas' Ballerina and Whistler's Mother; Banksy's Girl with Balloon, together with Munch's The Scream, Duchamp's Fountain and Picasso's Harlequin and his Companion together with the Last Supper.
What a feast of images. I loved trying to work them all out, and I am still working on some.
