Lydia Ourahmane at Tate Britain
The Third Choir, 2014, (20 oil barrels, CZ-5HE radio transmitter, 20 Samsung E21218 phones)
A sound installation comprising 20 empty barrels from the Algerian oil company, Naftal. Each barrel contains a mobile phone linked to an FM radio channel. The signal improves if you lean towards the barrel. Algeria relies on the revenue it gets from oil, and many Algerian blame the oil industry for the country's social and economic problems. This leads to a desire to leave, often through illegal migration to Europe. The barrels have taken the same journey to Europe as the one often taken by migrants from Algeria.
