Rachel Whiteread

Rachel Whiteread at Tate Britain

Untitled (Stairs), 2001, (plaster, fibreglass and wood)

Untitled (Stairs) is a plaster cast of the negative space around a staircase from a building in Bethanl Green, East London. First the site of a Baptist church, then a synagogue, and rebuilt as a textile factory after bomb damage in WWII, it lay empty for 20 years until becoming Rachel Whiteread's home and studio in 1999. Evidence of these varied histories remained present when the artist arrived, and this work seeks to contain the memories of this space as solid form.
