Neon Rice Field, 1993, (rice and neon tubes)
Ten tonnes of white rice are laid out like a paddy field over lines of red neon. Rice might stereotypically be considered a symbol for Asia, yet is eaten worldwide. Neons were once associated with Western cities but are now visible across Asia. These materials blend to create a glowing illusion, representing the idea that cultural identity is imagined and unfixed. The rice will be collected for processing after display and then donated to local foodbanks.
