A bitter sweet evening

Our evening meal at Edem two nights ago was bitter sweet. We had a wonderful time with family who were visiting from the UK, but were also constantly aware of the fire that is raging in Evia, an island 65 miles away from Athens. What looks like a cloud above the horizon and beneath the setting sun is in fact smoke that has travelled 65 miles to reach Athens and pollute the atmosphere: there has been a constant smell of burning, and lots of ash on our terrace.

Apocalyptic feel.

For a few seconds the sun managed to emerge through the smoke

and then disappeared.
