Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporanea do Chiado

Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporanea do Chiado

The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Chiado is housed in a stylish building with a pleasant courtyard cafe and rooftop terrace, constructed around a 19th century biscuit factory. Within the gallery's permanent collection are works by some of Portugal's most influential artists since the 19th century, along with foreign artists influenced by Portugal. There are also temporary exhibitions.

Arches and brick vaulted ceilings are to be found throughout the building - they are stunning.

Art works are dotted around the place

Lisa Milroy, Shoes, 1990 (oil on canvas)

Jorge Vieira, Untitled, 1960, (granit rose)

Ernesto Canto Da Maia, Adam and Eve, 1923, (polychrome terracotta)

Upstairs, in one of the galleries, the old brick wall where the ovens were situated that cooked the workers' lunch, are still in place
